Imagine this: On the eve of your 29th birthday you lose your job. What do you do? Well, if you’re Molly Bakes you stay up until one in the morning baking and frosting 30 cupcakes for your friends. That evening proved pivotal for Molly, as it was the beginning of a love affair for baking and a new career.
Soon thereafter, she began selling cupcakes in Brick Lane Market in London’s East side. It was then she came to another turning point. She discovered cake pops. Within a year, she perfected her Molly Bakes Cake Pops, and out of their overwhelming success came Crazy for CAKE POPS, the new and delicious title from Ulysses Press.
So, what’s a cake pop? When I first saw the title and cover art, I thought for sure I knew. Tiny cakes made in molds with added sticks. How delightfully surprised I was to find that I was only PARTIALLY right. Molly has developed a simple technique that eliminates the molds. Cool, huh?
So, if not molds, what gives them their shape? We do. Basically the pops are a mixture of crumbled, pre-baked cake and frosting that’s made into a sculpting medium–for lack of a better term. The sticks are then inserted into the shapes and frosted accordingly. Take a second and think about that. No worries how lopsided the cakes are. No worries if the cakes don’t come out of the baking pans in one sheet. It’s kinda life changing!
As far as the designs are concerned, I can sum them up in one word: Delightful. Molly shares 50 adorable creations for just about any holiday or occasion. For flavors, she offers up a nice variety including red velvet, peanut butter, toffee, lemon and, of course, the quintessential vanilla and chocolate.
Ms. Bakes has an engaging, straightforward style of writing, making CAKE POPS as charming to read as to look at. And speaking of ‘look at’, this is the kind of book that will captivate little kiddos, as the colorful images of the pops make them seem as if they came straight out of Willy Wonka’s edible garden.
As you can probably tell, I was smitten with Molly Bakes and her cake pops, which means I’m giving this book two very enthusiastic thumbs up. To read more about Crazy for CAKE POPS, follow this link to Ulysses Press, and to nab a copy of your own, visit Amazon, where it’s on sale today for $10.17.
