We're getting to that time of year where two different things are happening: parties are picking up, and the cold weather is forcing us to spend more time indoors. So… basically the perfect combination for some cozy aromatherapy! The fall season has so many distinct smells associated with it – like crisp winds, earthy leaves, fresh rain – and one of the most recognizable scent combinations is that of mulling spices. Whether you have a dinner party coming up, or simply want to flood your home with the scents of the season, this quick fall simmer pot is sure to do the trick.
- 1 large pot
- 3 apples, sliced
- Peel from 1 orange
- 1 nutmeg seed, grated
- 5-7 cinnamon sticks
- Handful of whole cloves
- 1 teaspoon ginger powder
- 1 teaspoon allspice
- A stove or burner
- Water to fill the pot
Combine all of the ingredients, except for the water, into a large pot. Fill the pot with water until it is three-quarters of the way full.
Heat the mixture on the stove until it simmers. Stir, and enjoy the aroma of your fall simmer pot! Keep the mixture simmering to continue enjoying the potpourri. If the water levels drop too low, simply refill to keep the scents flowing.
If you're having a dinner party and your stovetop is occupied, you can alternatively heat this recipe up in a crockpot with the same results.
The aroma lasts a surprisingly long time too, even after you remove it from the heat. NOTE: Do not sample this fall simmer pot recipe! Even though it smells good enough to eat, it is for your nose only! Happy fall!
