created at: 04/03/2012

One of our favorite things to do in this lovely weather is to sit outside and watch all the hummingbirds visit our neighbor’s bird feeders.  I can only imagine the bird traffic we’d get if we had something as fun and funky as this bird bath/vertical planter amongst all the feeders!   Beth from Home Stories, A to Z had a challenge to make something for the birds, and came up with this colorful and clever arrangement.  Continue Reading

How to Make an IKEA Plate Bird Feeder

How to make a bird feeder out of Ikea plates

Instructable-er PaulEl shows us how to turn two IKEA plates into one cool bird feeder. Here’s what we’ll need to make one:

  • 2 – 12 ” Hultet Bamboo Plates (Although, to help keep the squirrels at bay, I might opt for the 18″ Hultet for the top plate to help act as a baffle.)
  • a 3/8-16, 12″ carriage bolt
  • drill
  • washers, nuts, fasteners, as needed
  • string or wire
  • a key chain clip
  • the maker says these materials are what he used, but encourages experimentation

How to Turn Old Frisbees into a New Bird Feeder

created at: 2009-08-07

Leland is a very clever guy. The proof: he took a couple of Frisbees and an empty mayonnaise jar and turned them into a bird feeder. What I find remarkable about his creation is it looks like a store bought bird feeder! If you’d like to make one of your own, here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 Frisbees or Frisbee-type deals
  • 1 empty 1-quart size plastic mayonnaise jar
  • 1″ dowel that’s 1/2″ long
  • 1 coffee mug hook
  • 1 round head screw #8 x 1
  • hot glue gun and glue
  • compass
  • drill
  • X-acto knife

For Leland’s detail instructions on how to put it all together, follow this link. Continue Reading
