Real Talk: What’s the Best Christmas Cookie?

Real Talk: What's the Best Holiday Cookie?

I never believed in Santa Claus.

I was raised in a pragmatic and practical household. My parents were, and are, no-nonsense folk. Keen on traditions, but not fond excess frill. This was true during the holidays, too. From the very beginning, there was no Santa. He was just a story, a nice idea. Instead of the jolly man in the red suit, there was gratitude for one another, and drawn-out appreciation for gifts received (we were only allowed to open two gifts a day – one in the morning and one at night – for the duration of the twelve days of Christmas, or until the gifts ran out). Real Talk: Does Anyone Actually Like Pumpkin Pie?

Real Talk: What's the Best Thanksgiving Pie?

When it comes to Thanksgiving and Christmas, it’s easy to get obsessed about the details. The holidays only come once a year and it sucks to feel like you missed out on the festivities. We all have certain traditions that make the holidays just feel like the holidays. One year as a kid, my mom tried to change up Thanksgiving dinner. She didn't feel like cooking the same old turkey and green bean casserole, so instead we had a thematic dinner. Continue Reading

Weekend (Foodie) Project: How to Make Ice Cream without an Ice Cream Maker

Well, it’s officially August, and the summer ice cream recipes are still flowing pretty steadily around the web (and on Pinterest). Honestly though, I never give all those recipes a second thought, no matter how delicious they may look, because I don’t have that magic thing that I need: an ice cream maker. Luckily though, I have good news on that front…I will most definitely be paying more attention to those ice cream recipes now because it turns out, you can make your own ice cream without a machine. How To: Make Designer Marimekko-Inspired Macarons

created at: 01/31/2013

You may be familiar with the Unikko pattern, an iconic floral print from Finnish textile giant Marimekko. The bold print has been around since 1964 and graces everything from bedding to ceramics to shoes to cotton fabric-by-the-yard. It’s the floral darling of the textile design world. It also, apparently, makes for a fine-tasting macaron!

Laura from Craftstorming recently came up with this plan (and recipe) for creating these mod, Marimekko-inspired macarons as part of her Sew Yummy column*. Continue Reading
