After a long and harsh winter, it's a privilege to get outside on the weekends and do a little bit of “spring cleaning” in your outdoor spaces. Taking care of the little things now will set you and your plants up for success, so you both can enjoy that sweet, sweet sunshine all summer long. Here are the basics to tackle as you work on your spring yard maintenance:
I was a junior in high school when my cat, Donut, came into my life. She was a rescue from the local ASPCA, and she’s been my ride-or-die ever since. Because I was young when I got her, I didn’t understand all of her needs. Over the last decade of us living together, the space that Donut takes up in my home grows larger and larger – because like any other living thing, she needs more than water and shelter to thrive. I'd love to be a plant lady (I hear this is the new cat lady!) but there's one problem…I can't seem to keep my plants alive. No matter how hard I try, I was not blessed with the gift of a green thumb. Instead, my house is filled with fake plants so that I can enjoy the greenery without the constant fear of killing them. I also have cats, and it's difficult to find plants that are nontoxic to pets, and they generally leave the fake plants alone. Continue Reading
We are toe-deep in this air plant trend (I say only toe deep because they are very teeny plants). Also known as tillandsia, air plants are are everywhere you look. If you’re like me and you’re always on the hunt for an easy-to-care-for plant, chances are you owned at least one. Air plants are cool because they require no dirt, but what if I told you there was a plant that requires no watering because it lives in water??Continue Reading
JoAnn Moser is a longtime friend and contributor to Curbly, and this month, she's excited to be releasing her second book, Garden Builder. Perfect for any gardener or outdoor enthusiast with a few basic DIY skills, it is packed with 31 complete project plans, each one featuring finished photos of the project along with cut lists and shopping lists, a construction diagram, and step-by-step instructions (complete with photos) show exactly how to build every project.
Today, we're pumped to be sharing a project from that book: a raised bed garden that keeps out all the squirrels, deer, rabbits, and other backyard critters that like to take your growing produce off the plant, take one bite, then just leave it there to mock you. Continue Reading
My parents basically live in their backyard. It's large and lovely, with carefully tended flower gardens, enviable vegetable beds, and fruit trees galore. It's a take-your-breath-away kind of space you'd never expect when you look at their quiet suburban street. But when you enter the backyard, you feel the magic.
One of the last items on their landscaping to-do list was to add a water feature. Last summer my dad built a three-season gazebo (they lovingly call it the “tea house”, a reference to the Japanese tea house it's modeled after). Continue Reading
It’s that time of year again! The season to start thinking about our outdoor gardens and spaces! When we first moved into our home three years ago, the outdoor living space was…decent. But it wasn’t quite our taste, and that made it a bit challenging to get over what we inherited and visualize an outdoor space that was meaningful to us.
But this year, we decided to take our first baby steps towards a more modern and clean outdoor space. Continue Reading
Succulents are awesome. I don’t have the best luck with keeping indoor plants healthy (or alive), but succulents seem to always have my back. They’re hardy, they don’t mind if you forget to water them for a few days, and they don’t require a ton of maintenance. Plus they are just adorable. Additionally, they are also easy to fill your home with for almost no extra cost. All it takes is a little propagation; as in, you can regrow succulents from existing leaves (magic, right?).
