You Know You Want to Cuddle Up in This DIY Flannel Throw

DIY Flannel Throw | Cozy up!

Ahh, autumn. You make me want to light bonfires in my backyard, start drinking cocoa on the daily, and cozy up in anything warm and snuggly. This fall I'm exploring my reignited love of flannel (I'm actually wearing a flannel shirt right now as I write this), and with these local Minnesota temperatures ever on the decline, a DIY flannel throw was in order. This Old House meets Project Runway…and the outcome is fabulous!! It all started with an oversized plaid work shirt and became a fun and flirty vest, a la Marc Jacobs. To make one, you’ll need this stuff:

  • a hand needle
  • a ruler
  • a scissors
  • a seam ripper
  • a sewing machine
  • a shirt, oversized, plaid flannel with a back yoke
  • tailor’s chalk
  • thread

A Project Runway tie skirt inspired him but he chose to run the ties diagonally to get the maximum swirl fromt he bias cut ties. Continue Reading

How to mix and match patterned fabric without going nutty.

So you want to use patterned fabric but are worried about pattern overload. Domino gives three basic rules to keep in mind to keep your creative design from going just plain crazy.

1. Three's company. Keep your pattern count to three as any more might push your room over the edge.

2. When using stripes–think straight. Domino suggests that the bold stripe on the table in the picture above complements ‘the traditional ticking stripe on the bench cushion without being too matchy.’ Continue Reading
