If you’re anything like me, you have a running list of projects you want to try. Things you save repeatedly on Pinterest, ideas you scribble down in the back of your planner, or maybe you just keep a mental list in your brain. Clothesline baskets have been on my want-to-try list for forever, and this week I took the plunge. After conquering the first one, I want to make a million of these clothesline baskets. It’s the season of organization and purging, and it’s high time to get real with ourselves. Let’s talk about the junk drawer. You know the one I’m talking about. The drawer that holds everything and anything: takeout menus, a few rubber bands, hardware from that IKEA chair you bought two years ago, and an orange-handled pair of scissors. Maybe you are one of the blessed few who has managed to avoid the never-ending pit that is the junk drawer. Continue Reading
Are you ready for a crazy-quick sewing project? I’m calling this the “half hour half apron” because it’s one of the fastest sewing projects I think I’ve ever completed. Honestly, if I busted out a few more of these half aprons, I believe I could get my time down to 15 minutes. No sweat. My point is, this half apron is a breeze to make. This is a perfect project for beginner sewers. Plus, who doesn’t need an adorable handmade apron in their kitchen? Continue Reading
Oh mud cloth. You are so dreamy. So unique. So hot-right-now. And so not in my budget. Even though this unique textile is hard to come by, it's easy enough to recreate the look. If you can't buy it, you DIY it, right? This mud cloth fake-out method is great for larger surfaces, or when you want to add some statement to a room.
I love the look. It's also known as Bògòlanfini, which roughly translated from the Bambara language of Mali means “by means of mud.” Continue Reading

I’ve been wanting a scroll saw for awhile, so when I saw this Instructable, you can probably guess what I did. Squealed like a little girl! Yes, it’s possible to convert an old sewing machine into a scroll saw. Bongodrummer shows us how to do it, and it’s not that difficult either. A great resource for cast-off sewing machines is Craigslist and FreeCycle, of course, but secondhand stores are loaded with them too. Oftentimes they’re in sewing machine cabinets, which, by the way, make EXCELLENT laptop tables. Continue Reading
Are you kidding? Does anyone have a sewing machine repairman that comes to your house for $30.00 a pop? With an entire gaggle of sewing machines, I only pay $30.00 per machine when a certain unnamed fabric store charges $60.00 for a tune up by the very same guy. Ha! For once, I won one.
The best part is not having to lug the machines to the shop. The physical strain would be bad enough, let alone the $60.00 Continue Reading
Skipped stitches, puckering thread, broken thread, broken needles…all can leave a cloud of obscenities hanging in the air. And although swearing generally feels good, it really doesn’t do any good. So, when your sewing machine starts to get irritable, take a deep breath and go to this page at sewandserge.com.

Aside from my family, my favorite things in life are my camera, my sewing machines, and my beloved power tools. If there’s ever a doubt about what to buy a DIY Girl, at least one of these tools should keep her happy and busy for a couple of days.
These are just the tools I have right now. I’m not promoting any specific brand.
First up, Portable drill. You can’t say enough about a good, heavy duty portable drill, lots of drill bits and an extra battery. Continue Reading
