You’re probably dealing with a smaller space or odd physical obstacles (like no mantel, or too many mantels!). And your landlord might even have restrictions on real trees or lighting candles. All these hurdles just means that the earned end result is far more satisfying. Continue Reading

Renting your home has some perks (no mortgage, no maintenance costs, no headaches), but there are downsides: apartment decorating can be a challenge, and limited storage space makes it hard to stay organized.

Many apartments are too small or don't offer much storage. Maybe the landlord won't let you paint or put nail holes in the wall. And rental properties are usually fitted with unsightly light-fixtures or unattractive flooring. Continue Reading

How to: DIY Family Silhouette Art in Under an Hour

Family Silhouette Art in Under an Hour

I've been itching to do some DIY art for our home that could involve my kids, but still be stylish and modern. This family silhouette art is definitely a blast from the past! I remember doing this in elementary school and coming home proudly displaying my rather odd-looking silhouette for my parents. This time around, I decided to have it more large scale, keeping the colors simple and the frames clean. It took less than an hour by the time I had them framed and up on the wall!  Continue Reading

This tiny space started out as a closed balcony then morphed into a bedroom then morphed again into a stunning, light-filled dining room!  Don’t believe me?  Check out the ‘after’ below!

Sibylle Roessler from the blog Funky Time sent over a link to her dining room makeover and let’s just say I was blown away!  The space started out as a closed balcony, which means it had windows on the inside that led to the living room – an awkward feature for a bedroom (which is what the previous tenants had used the space for).   Continue Reading

Creating Your Own Small-Space Edible Garden

created at: 03/23/2011

Confession: As a vegetable gardener, I’m pretty pathetic. We used to have a 12′ x 15′ vegetable garden at the back of our property (about 200 feet from our house and down a somewhat steep hill). With the weeding and watering, our excitement every spring for growing our own peppers and tomatoes faded quickly, leaving us with a less than flourishing garden.
