How To: Impress Everyone with Perfect Gift Wrapping

created at: 12/20/2011My dad used to do grunt work at a hospital, and one of his responsibilities was to make the beds and get them ready for new patients.  He became very good and fast and pretty much expected us kids to have perfectly made beds after imparting upon us the “right way” to make a bed.  So, what does this have to do with wrapping presents, you ask?   Because I became an expert sheet-tucker, I inadvertently became pretty darn good at wrapping presents too- the technique is one in the same.  Continue Reading

created at: 12/22/2010

‘Tis the season of hostess gifts, and for those who imbibe, one of the most appreciated will be a bottle of wine. Sure, you can hand the bottle over naked or in the cheesy bag the liquor store hands out this time of year, but wouldn’t you rather give something pretty? Something that says ‘I care enough to do a little diy’? Of course you would! That’s why I’ve scoured the internets to find the very best wine bottle wraps, cozies, bags and tags tutorials. Curbly Roundup: Gift Wrap & Tags

created at: 12/15/2010

When prepping for this roundup, Iimagined I’d find hundreds if not thousands of gift wrap and gift tag ideas. I was right. Picking just a sample of all that I found proved to be overwhelming. But, I turned on my internal editor and got to work. My criteria for including the ones I have? Something about the images had to make me pause as I clicked through. A clever use of materials, something I hadn’t seen before or just the sheer loveliness of object. Continue Reading

How To: Print Your Own DIY Wrapping Paper

created at: 12/15/2010

This year, I’m all over making my own wrapping paper. I’ve made bold, graphic paper using type, drawn a subtle handmade snowflake design, and adorned plain paper with DIY stamps, but I wanted to do a full-on printed pattern over an entire sheet.   I do know how to screen print, but it’s a lot of work for a couple sheets, so I turned to another classic printmaking technique: a carved linoleum block. A contemporary update to woodblock printing, this method carves away the negative space of a design, leaving your image raised and inkable, which then gets transfered to the paper or fabric. What to Do with Your Post-Holiday Waste and Wrapping Paper.

Christmas on a Friday means lots of things – four day weekends for many 9-5ers, a few days after New Years before the kids head back to school…and that you have to hang onto your wrapping paper and waste until at least Monday when the sanitation department people get back to work. But, of course, you’d never just lug it to the curb and send if off to landfill land.

But what should you do with it? Continue Reading

Clever DIY Gift Card Holders

created at: 2009/12/09

If you’re giving gift cards this holiday season, they’ve probably come in utilitarian envelopes  in which to give them. For something a bit different–and MUCH more memorable–how about presenting those gift cards in an empty Altoid tin? BHG suggests we cover the cover in pretty paper to hide the ‘toid part.

Or how about framing the gift card in a small photo frame as a two-fer?

In this one, the maker slipped some decorative paper inside an unused cd case and then fitted the card inside. Continue Reading
