Try these Easy Twisted Macrame Keychains

Macrame has recently made a comeback, so I was excited to learn some of the basics for making macrame pieces myself at home. It’s surprisingly easy to make these twisted macrame keychains with colored beads and a fringe bottom, and you can whip one up in as little as 15 minutes. Customize them with colorful wooden beads and make this beautiful twisted look simply by repeating the same knot!

This is a great beginner macrame project, and when repeated, this left square knot creates a beautiful twisted pattern that looks much more complicated than it really is, so be prepared to impress everyone you know.  Continue Reading

Upgrade your Space with a Simple Beaded Fan Pull

Living in a rental means I’m stuck with a few things I don’t like, including vertical blinds, ugly ceiling fans and popcorn ceiling. While some things are more difficult to swap out (whether you’re renting or just on a budget), it doesn’t have to completely limit you. Upgrade a fan or ceiling lamp with a simple beaded fan pull to replace an ugly, boring chain in about 10 minutes.

I dislike the ceiling fans in my apartment more than anything, but we can’t rip them out, so I decided to make the small upgrade of removing the boring standard chain and replacing it with a DIY version made with painted wooden beads. Continue Reading

Make It: Colored Pencil Jewelry

I’m guessing my fellow Curbliers love colored pencils as much as I do. So why not show our love by wearing them? Granted, the original how-to was a back-to-school project challenge, but those beads are so cute, they really shouldn’t be limited to the classroom. Also, what a great way to use up ‘nubs?!’ To see how to make each of these items, scoot on over to Design Mom.

How to: Dye Beads with Blackberries

created at: 02/03/2011

In my review yesterday of Sasha Duerr’s new work, The Handbook of Natural Dyes, I mentioned that the publisher gave me permission to share one of the projects in the book. I found one perfect for those who are new to natural dyeing: dyeing beads with blackberries.

Sasha tells us that beads made of wood, bone ‘or other natural fibers like wool felt or silk’ take to natural dye wonderfully. In this tutorial, Sasha explains the process using wooden beads.  Continue Reading

Book Beads: A Pictorial Tutorial

beads that look like teeny-tiny tomes

After you’ve made your Book Planter, you’re going to have some book innards leftover. And since we don’t like to waste ANYTHING here at Curbly–especially books or any parts of them–how about making some book beads with the page remainders? Smallest Forest gives us all the deets in a beautiful pictorial tutorial. Eyeballing the images, I’d say all we need to make them is a paper punch, glue and some thread/string.

How to bind your favorite eBooks

So you’ve downloaded an eBook. Now what? Well, if you’re a bibliophile like me, you might want to print out the ones you love. Like Curbly’s new Make It! Secondhand Chic, for example. I’m lucky enough have the new edition to the Curbly Library in perfect-bound, so I’m set for hard copy. However, I had a copy of David duChemin’s wonderful photography book ’10’ on my hard drive that needed to be birthed onto paper.  Continue Reading

Bead & Wire Collage

created at: 2009-06-29

A few weeks ago, after seeing a show at my local art center and coming home completely inspired, I tried my hand at mixed media collage. Yeah, the outcome was mixed alright. It was a mixed-up mess. I’m talkin’ fugly. I nearly pitched the entire idea of collage when it occurred to me that paper might not be the best choice for me.

Beads, I decided, were the way to go. With my beading supplies before me, I set to work. Continue Reading
